Small to Medium Size Businesses Save by using Integrated T1s Integrated T1 service is now priced so low that businesses can afford T1 service who didn’t think they could. Often a business can have T1 service for less than they are currently paying for POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). Integrated T1 service combines phone service and Internet access on one T1. Thus the cost of phone service plus Internet Access will be replaced by the cost of the Integrated T1. In addition to the monthly rates often being lower, typically, usage rates on a T1 will be lower than toll charges on POTS lines. A T1 can be thought of as having 24 channels. Each channel can be used for 64 kbps of Internet Access so that if all 24 channels are used for data, the resulting Internet access bandwidth is 1.5 Mbps. Legacy voice T1s use each of the 64 Kbps channels for a voice or phone line. A simple Integrated T1 uses some of the 24 channels for voice and the rest for data. Today, the number of carriers who we represent that offer an Integrated T1 is increasing. Also, the technology is improving. Although one used to need one T1 channel for each voice line, new compression technology allows more than one voice line per 64 Kbps. Also, some carrier plans offer Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA). Instead of your being forced to decide ahead of time how many T1 channels will be used for voice and how many used for data, the system decides dynamically. The way this works is that whenever a voice line is needed, it is given channel bandwidth up to the configured number of phone lines. Whatever bandwidth is left, after all the voice line needs are satisfied, is given to Internet access. In other words, if you are on a phone call and hang up, the bandwidth that you were using is used to increase that available for Internet access until someone picks up a phone or an incoming call arrives. Carriers have certain geographic areas where they offer Integrated T1s and each carrier has certain parameters that they can offer. For example, some carrier plans include DBA and others do not. Similarly, one carrier might only offer between 12 and 24 voice channels on their Integrated T1s while another might only offer Integrated T1s with voice lines between 6 and 12.
